OSHA Porta Potty Requirements for Construction Sites

OSHA regulations require construction sites to provide adequate restroom facilities for workers. The standard is 1 portable toilet for every 10 workers on a construction site.

For longer-term projects (more than 8 hours), handwashing facilities are mandatory. You must also ensure regular servicing (typically weekly for standard sites, more frequent for larger crews).

OSHA Standard 1926.51(c)

"Toilets shall be provided for employees according to the following table: 20 or fewer persons - One toilet. 20 or more persons - One toilet and one urinal per 40 workers."

Quick Construction Calculator:

  • 1-10 workers: 1 standard unit + 1 handwash station
  • 11-20 workers: 2 standard units + 1 handwash station
  • 21-40 workers: 3 standard units + 2 handwash stations
  • 41-60 workers: 5 standard units + 2 handwash stations

Construction Site Porta Potty Best Practices

1. Strategic Placement

Place units within 200 feet of the work area. For multi-story buildings, position them near access points on each floor if possible.

2. Regular Service Schedule

Standard construction sites need weekly servicing. High-traffic sites (40+ workers) may need twice-weekly service. Handwashing stations require regular water and soap refills.

3. Handwashing Is Mandatory

OSHA requires handwashing facilities at construction sites. Place handwashing stations adjacent to porta potties. Minimum 1 station per 20 workers.

4. ADA Accessibility

Provide at least 1 ADA-accessible unit for sites with disabled workers or to comply with accessibility regulations.

5. Secure and Level Ground

Ensure porta potties are placed on stable, level ground and secured properly. Unstable placement is a safety hazard.

Long-Term Construction Rentals

Most construction projects require long-term porta potty rentals. Rental companies typically offer monthly rates that are more economical than daily rentals:

  • Weekly service included: Most monthly rentals include once-weekly servicing
  • Volume discounts: Sites with 5+ units often receive discounted rates
  • Seasonal pricing: Off-season rates (November-March) may be 10-20% lower
  • Delivery and pickup: Typically included in monthly rental price

Average Monthly Costs (with weekly service):

  • Standard unit: $150-250/month
  • ADA unit: $200-350/month
  • Handwashing station: $100-175/month
